What Is a Transformer Oil Level Indicator?

A transformer oil level indicator watches the oil level in the conservator, the reservoir above the main tank, and raises an alarm if it drops below a preset point. It is the first, simplest check in a chain of protection that ends with the Buchholz relay.

Why does the oil level actually matter?

A transformer's oil does two jobs — insulating the windings and carrying heat away from them — and the conservator lets that oil expand and contract with temperature without exposing the main tank to open air. If the level falls low enough, some substation transformers relay an alarm to the control center so an operator can investigate.

How does it fit with the Buchholz relay?

If a transformer has no low-oil alarm on the conservator itself, a Buchholz gas alarm will also flag a low oil level, because the float inside the Buchholz relay responds to the oil level in its own housing as well as to gas from a fault. We cover the Buchholz relay itself, and how it sits between the tank and the conservator, in a separate post.

What does a real indicator look like?

MESSKO's MTO oil level indicators are measuring devices, with or without switching contacts, built for fill-level measurement in transformer oil conservators. The MTO series comes with a choice of float drive, radial or axial, up to three microswitches, and up to four additional relays, and can be specified with digital output as well as the standard analog signal to a control cabinet or monitoring system.

Why does the digital option matter?

A German distribution operator, Energie Waldeck-Frankenberg, replaced older indicators at its Korbach substation with digital MTO units so oil-level data reaches the control room directly rather than needing a site visit to read a dial. That is the same direction transformer accessories are moving generally: a device built to do one job mechanically now also reports what it sees.

What we see, representing this line in Taiwan

We have represented Messko's protective-devices and monitoring line, oil level indicators included, for 10+ years. Most enquiries are not about the indicator alone — they are a spec question tied to a conservator size and a switching-contact count, and our engineering team, which includes engineers who previously worked at Fortune Electric and Allis Electric, checks that against the transformer before we quote.
